Join us on US Election Night to celebrate the vibrant, inventive work of American composers and lyricists, in aid of The Passage.

The sound of America as depicted in the music of the innovative, inventive American composers of the 19th and 20th centuries is as urban and dynamic as its bustling cities, and as open and sweeping as its expansive landscapes.

American composers and lyricists have brought an extraordinary energy and freshness to the classical music genre; composers such as Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, John Philip Sousa, Samuel Barber and Richard Rogers all wrote music that broke down the perceived barriers between popular and classical music.

They were also unafraid to tackle social issues - Gershwin insisted on featuring an all-black cast in Porgy and Bess, his opera set in America’s deep south; Bernstein’s West Side Story touches on antagonisms between different ethnic groups in 1950s New York; Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific explores issues around racial prejudice and mixed-race relationships; and their musical Carousel is the story of young lives gone wrong and eventual redemption.
